Special Presentation

Diagnosis and Assessment of Psychological Trauma in the Refractive Surgery Patient

Mental health professionals are advised that psychological trauma in the LASIK patient can take many forms, including Major Depression, Acute Stress and Posttraumatic Stress Disorders, Substance Abuse Disorders, suicidal thoughts, and completed suicide. Occupational and family stresses are common. Many patients allege ongoing abuse by medical professionals, by industry, and by the FDA, which complicates straightforward assessment and treatment of LASIK-induced emotional trauma. No previous mental health history is necessary for these disorders to develop. The presentation includes vision simulations of ghosting and double vision, starbursting, glare, halos, and loss of contrast sensitivity (see www.TheVisionCommunity.com), as well as video excerpts from the April 25th FDA Ophthalmic Devices panel meeting regarding LASIK complications, depression, and suicide.

This presentation will last approximately 60 minutes, with time for a question and answer session. Participation in this teleconference is free. Each caller is responsible for normal telephone charges with their telephone service provider.

If you would like to participate in this call simply email lsw_membership@lasiksurgerywatch.org and put Register in the subject line. Information for dialing in will be sent to registered participants the day before the presentation.
